Now, it'll come as no great surprise to anyone that Donald Trump is maybe not the most popular man on the planet, but it's Christmas, so we can cut him some slack, right?

Wrong.

It would seem that The Donald has been committed the heinous crime of shaking a kid's belief in Santa Claus.

Yes, that's right. Donald Trump killed Santa Claus.

Donald and Melania Trump.

OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but here's how it went down.

Donnie and his wife, US First Lady Melania Trump, were taking calls from kids across the whole of the US of A as part of a Christmas tradition.

The POTUS was on the phone to a seven-year-old LAD called Coleman. In a short video, Trump can be heard saying to the kid: "Are you still a believer in Santa.

"Because at 7, it's marginal, right?"

Marginal? Well, it certainly is now you've effectively told me that he's not real, so thanks mate.

Luckily, he then pulled it back slightly, adding: "Well, you just enjoy yourself."

To be fair, it's only a minor indiscretion, and - let's not forget - Santa Claus isn't actually real.

Trump and his wife were gathered by the phones on Christmas Eve to help kids 'track Santa'.

Let me explain that. Since 1955, NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence Command) has been using radar detection to track Santa's journey as he travels the whole globe in a night delivering presents.

So, some lucky kids get the opportunity to chat with the President or First Lady to help them find out where the big man is.

As an aside, you could lose hours just watching the live feed of a tiny CGI sleigh flying on Google Maps - it's boring, but mesmerising.

Back to Donnie. He did eventually pull it together and manage not to shake any other kids' beliefs. In another call, he said: "What's Santa going to get you for Christmas?

"Have a great Christmas, and I'll talk to you again, OK?"

Perhaps unlike her husband, Melania seems to be really getting into that part of the Christmas tradition. After they had finished she tweeted the pictures of herself and Donald on the phones with the caption: "Helping children across the country track #Santa is becoming one of my favorite traditions!@Potus and I enjoyed working with @NORADSanta - #ChristmasEve."

Well, as long as Donnie doesn't tell any more kids that Santa isn't real, it will continue.
