Learner Driver Plunges 20 Feet Into A River After Getting The Pedals Mixed Up

We've all had bad experiences as a L-plater, but this takes the cake.

A teenager has learned the hard way what happens when you mix up the pedals while driving. Watch below as this 19-year-old presses the accelerator instead of the brake and goes hurtling through a fence and into a river.

We've all been in a situation while we were learning to drive and things got a little... messed up.

Whether your parent was freaking out because you couldn't merge on a highway or you both ended up with neck problems from dropping the clutch so heavily - it's all part of the process.

But this teen will certainly not let history repeat itself after he had a rather unfortunate mishap with the accelerator and brake pedals.

The teen was driving his dad's van in the town of Xiaolan in Zhongshan City in South China's Guangdong Province earlier this month when he came to a T-intersection.

What he wanted to do was calmly turn left onto a street and continue about his ride - even though he didn't actually have his driver's licence yet.

What he ended up doing was accidentally hitting the accelerator when he wanted to hit the brake, which caused the van to shoot into a river.

The van burst through the concrete balustrade and plunged 20 feet from Huicheng Road into the water below. Thankfully for them, the river wasn't too deep and didn't carry them away or turn them into a watery grave.

When authorities arrived, they weren't impressed.

The 19-year-old was fined more than $300 and given 15 days of administrative detention and his dad was also punished for lending his vehicle to an individual who he knew did not have a licence.

That would certainly be enough to make you not want to drive anymore, but imagine doing all the study for your driving test and finding out that you failed for a completely bizarre reason.

A man who drove himself unsupervised to his own driving test ended up being arrested on suspicion of taking the vehicle without the owner's consent.

And to make his day even worse, he failed his test for the tenth time.

West Midlands Police shared a photo of the white Mitsubishi - in which the man had arrived - on Twitter and explained the bizarre situation.

In a post from the Force Response unit they called him: "Welcome to the world of stupid. Male turns up at the driving test centre for his driving test. Having driven himself there unsupervised.

"Then fails his test for the 10th time - male arrested by D unit Newtown for TWOC [taking without owner consent] offence."
