Everyone loves a bit of family drama, but the last place you'd expect it to spill over is into the classroom - particularly when you're at university.

One university student in the US found out she was adopted after she realised her blood type didn't match up during a routine biology lecture. Oh 'eck.

With help from her professor, the student - believed to be at California State University - discovered that the man she'd spent her whole life believing was her dad was, in actual fact, her uncle. Well, that's a turn up for the books.

The amazing incident was shared by Cal State student Anya, who took to Twitter two days ago to regale social media with the tale. It has now been shared as a Twitter Moment.

According to Anya, in her biology class this past Monday the students were learning about blood types, and one woman couldn't figure out why her blood type didn't make sense on her Punnett square.

If you don't know what a Punnett square is, it's a diagram used by biologists to figure out the likelihood of offspring having a particular genetic make-up, like what colour their eyes, hair - or blood type - will be.

The student believed her blood type was AB, but told her professor that her dad's blood type was O and her mum's was A - in other words, it didn't match up.

A few days later, the student returned to class and the teacher asked her if she'd figured out the discrepancy. What she told the room of over 240 people was amazing.

"TURNS OUT, her mom had an affair with her husband's brother which is his step brother," Anya explained.

"So technically, she's been raised by her uncle and not her dad her entire life - her mom hid it from the both of them for 21 years."

"Because my prof told her she was wrong with her blood types, she figured out her uncle was actually her dad and vice versa."

While you might instinctively read this and file it under 'Didn't happen,' it turns out it was totally legit, as other students vouched for what Anya had seen.

"LMFAOOOO HOLY SHIT I TWEETED THE SAME THING RIGHT AFTER IT HAPPENED TOO I WAS SHOOK," one person chimed in.

Sure enough, they did, sending this tweet earlier in the week:

Anya was delighted, as the input proved the thread wasn't fake news after all.

"PEOPLE CAN'T SAY I'M MAKING IT UP ANYMORE, IT HAPPENED", she replied.

You've got to love Twitter at times like this.

FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS STUDENT WHO INHALED LAUGHING GAS:

While Anya and her seconder might be best buds now, it hasn't gone well for the student's family as Anya reported the student's 'parents' are now getting a divorce. She's going to have some interesting family gatherings now.

Traumatic revelations aside, it's still a really cool story - scientifically, at least. I knew paying attention in biology was good for something.
