Chris Hemsworth says he had a blast playing 'Fat Thor' in Avengers: Endgame, in an appearance on tonight's Graham Norton Show.

The Australian actor spoke to host Norton about the superhero flick and whether he had to gain all that weight for the role - in the movie, the change in appearance occurs as Thor (the God of Thunder) deals with the fallout of Thanos wiping out half of all living creatures at the end of previous movie Infinity War.

But the 35-year-old revealed that he was actually wearing a prosthetic suit which had incredibly been specifically mapped on his body.

Jokingly, he said: "That was my full Raging Bull Oscar attempt."

He continued: "No, it's the most remarkable thing. It's a prosthetic latex kind of thing that I would slip into. It weighed about 60-70lbs - what's that, 30-40kgs? - with a zip up the back.

"And they'd taken photos of my body and every little sort of hair or freckle or whatever the hell was on that thing... that's my body in, like, six months' time."

The host then asked: "Thor was depressed - was it depressing for you walking around like that? Did people treat you differently?"

Smiling, Hemsworth then replied: "No, it was great. Yeah (they treated me differently), every time I stepped near the catering truck they were like, 'Nah, nah, nah, you've had enough big guy, get on the treadmill.'"

He added: "I got a lot of cuddles. My wife, she's had three kids, and often the pregnant lady will get their belly rubbed in the supermarket and Robert Downey gave me a fair share of those. Everyone wanted to cuddle me... I felt like Santa Claus, you know?"

"Get these Avengers on my lap from time to time... Just kind of felt weird."

The 'Fat Thor' scenes have attracted controversy from body positivity campaigners, who called out the movie for fat-shaming.

However, directorial team the Russo brothers have defended this stage of the character's story arc, with Anthony Russo telling Sirius XM: "Joe and I love subversion and to take the God who looks like a God and find a way to subvert that and re-invent the character...

"We find 'Fat Thor' as inspiring as any version of Thor because he's so relatable."

Endgame was a smash hit at the box office, breaking all records set before it. Earlier this week, Forbes magazine reported the blockbuster raked in an incredible $2.7bn worldwide.

Hemsworth said he felt like Santa Claus in his outfit.

Avengers: Endgame tickets accounted for more than four out of every five tickets sold at US cinemas in its first weekend after release. That's a LOT of tickets.

Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn told Variety: "Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office.

"Though Endgame is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend's monumental success is a testament to the world they've envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world."
