There was so much hype and buzz for The Inbetweeners: Fwends Reunited, which aired on New Year's Day. Many fans felt it was bound to be the perfect hangover cure after the boozy celebrations of the night before.

But fans were left pretty disappointed by the one-off show, which was hosted by Jimmy Carr, with the whole thing written off as 'painful' and 'awkward'.

It seems that it wasn't just the fans who were left deflated, either - one of the stars of the show, James Buckley, who plays Jay, said that he was made to look like a 'fucking idiot'.

The 31-year-old actor was speaking out on his podcast Completed It Mate when he discussed his disappointment.

He admitted: "It became a thing that wasn't a celebration of this good thing I did in my life, it was me being taken the piss out of for hours on end.

"I didn't have the personality or the intelligence to cope with it, especially when you're up against someone like Jimmy Carr, who's super quick and super funny.

"So I come across as a complete moron through the whole thing.

"I got caught where I was acting up as Jay, because there was an audience there of Inbetweeners fans, I got caught in this spot between Jay and myself where myself was going, 'You're acting like a fucking idiot, you're being a moron, you're being a dick.'"

James also revealed that he regrets not putting a stop to it sooner, adding: "I didn't want to go, 'Can we stop for a second? Because I don't know what the fuck's going on here. You're talking to me like I'm Jay from The Inbetweeners. I'm really not.'

"So that was another one of the reasons why it was a disaster."

We really wish you'd have said something, dude.

The programme ended up taking on the characteristics of a chat show, whereas viewers thought they would be settling down to watch a one-off episode of the sitcom itself.

One viewer wrote: "The Inbetweeners reunion was toe-curling... The biggest disappointment of 2019 has already happened, Inbetweeners Fwends Reunited, what is this shit ffs."

Another added: "Format of this show is fucking awful. Get rid of Jimmy Carr, get rid of the pointless awards and lets just have the cast anecdotes #fwendsreunited."

A third commented: "I was so psyched for the #inbetweenersreunion but it's turned out to be absolutely shite."

We can still live in hope that Channel 4 might one day remedy the entire situation with a new series of The Inbetweeners, but until then consider us well and truly crushed. Nice one.
