The Witcher Star Says He 'Hates' Toss A Coin To Your Witcher Song

The Witcher Star Says He 'Hates' Toss A Coin To Your Witcher Song

Joey Batey sang 'Toss A Coin To Your Witcher' in series one of The Witcher, and that's where he'd like it to stay

Joey Batey, who plays the travelling bard Jaskier in The Witcher, says that the song that made his character famous during the last season is categorically not on his Spotify Wrapped playlist this year.

In fact, he went as far as to say that he now ‘hates’ the ‘Toss A Coin To Your Witcher’ song and hopes he never has to endure it again.

The first series of the Netflix show was a smash hit, not just for the performances of Batey, as well as co-stars Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan, but also – in more unlikely fashion – for Jaskier’s catchy ode to the titular Witcher.

However, having presumably heard the song more than any other living person, Batey isn’t keen to hear it ever again.

He explained: “Yeah, I wish that I could be political about this, but I do hate it now. I could pretend that I don’t.

“I never want to hear it ever again, somebody had it as their ringtone the other day and I started twitching.

“I think it might be a wee while before I listen to it myself again.”

However, the fact that it’s been such a massive hit with the fans isn’t lost on Batey, and he doesn’t mind hearing it in that context.

He added: “There are people who still sing it to me in Sainsbury’s, and when that happens it is good.”

The positive news for Batey is that there is another song in this series, and – without giving too much away – it’s of a completely different style.

He explained: “[During the first season] we caught lightning in a bottle, and I don’t think we were particularly aiming to catch any more lightning in season two.

“We wanted to double down on the kind of songs that told stories and furthered the narrative arc, not only of Jaskier but of the continent.

“Season two is much darker, it’s much grittier, we’re starting to see the consequences of people’s actions and massive moral ambiguities and grey areas.

“It would be hard to try to fit a catchy, poppy song into the now darkening world.

“We wanted to match it as Jaskier would. He wouldn’t try to cheer everyone up, he would do what all good artists do and hold a mirror up to the world and hopefully examine and analyse it and do whatever he can to help people.”

The good news for those waiting to see those grittier and darker days on the continent is that we haven’t got too long to hold out now.

Series two of The Witcher will be available to watch on Netflix from 17 December.
