It's spooky season, if you haven't noticed - sure, Halloween is done, but in my world, this continues until Christmas properly starts. That means the nights are lengthening, the curtains get drawn early, the fire goes on and I stick on a horror movie.

Good news, then, for horror fans: there's a new one in the works and it's being filmed right here in Ireland. In Roscommon, no less, where shooting will start this month.

The Cellar is the brainchild of acclaimed Irish short film director Brendan Muldowney and will star some heavyweight talent, both Hollywood and local. The female lead is to be played by Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert - previously seen in Love Actually, Old School and (if you're old enough) kids horror classic Are You Afraid Of The Dark.

She'll be joined by Irish star Eoin Macken. The Dublin-born actor first came to prominence on Fair City and the BBC drama Merlin, before moving to America and featuring in several recent horror efforts including Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and The Hole In The Ground.

The film was greenlit after picking up attention at the American Film Market (AFM) trade fair, held online earlier this month.

"Some nightmares are meant to be shared with the world," said Patrick Ewald of Epic Pictures, who will executive produce the film. "The Cellar is perhaps the darkest one. The incredible combination of director Brendan Muldowney, producers Conor Barry and Richard Bolger, along with Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken make this unique and riveting horror story something special to capture the attention of buyers at AFM and audiences around the world."

Director Brendan Muldowney added: "I'm very excited to be working with such a talented cast and crew to bring the world of The Cellar into people's nightmares." It is funded in part by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland as well as funding partners from Belgium. The film is due to hit Irish cinemas next year.
