Severance fans think they've worked out whether Helly is an innie or an outie after spotting clue

Fans have a theory

Fans of the AppleTV+ show Severance are totally split, with the first two episodes raising a major concern as to whether one of the main characters is who they say they are.

The show follows a group of workers who ‘sever’ their memory of working.

They arrive at the elevator to head to their floor and work, and the next thing they remember is being in that exact same spot, with a full workday having passed.

The terrifying implication that Severance explores is what happens to the version of your consciousness that only exists at work - and what they do.

Referred to as 'innies', with the version existing solely out of work referred to as 'outties', the second season has led to a popular theory that Helly, despite being on the severed floor, is actually her outtie.

This is due to the ending to season one of Severance, which shockingly revealed that Helly, the most rebellious of the four main innies on the show, is actually Helena Eagan, an aristocratic member of the family who own the company they all work at.

And fans have suspected in the first two episodes of the show that Helena - rather than Hellie - has been sent down with the other severed workers to try and figure out what they know.

Suspicions originally arose from all the innies discussing what they saw when they were given freedom to live outside of work.

Season one’s finale saw them rebel and find an override switch, leading Burt to discover his love on the innie floor was married, Mark finding out his dead wife was their counsellor all along, and Helly to find out she is Helena Eagan.

Where the others tell the truth, Helly lies – saying she saw a gardener, a fact that arises suspicions in Burt, who queries why there was a ‘night gardener’.

One fan, however, thinks they spotted a clue in the show’s trailer, writing on Twitter: “Is it Helena or is it Helly R? Did the Severance season 2 trailer already tell us?

“Remember, Helly got tackled by Natalie before Dylan got tackled by Milcheck. If Helly were to wake up back on the Severance floor, she'd be calmer because her outie was tackled and could've been laying on the ground.

“Here's a clip from the trailer that I feel would be the more appropriate reaction from Helly if she were to wake up on the Severance floor. She's seeing the painting ‘Kier Pardons his Betrayers’ for the first time.

“It's Helena down there right now but we will see Helly at some point.”

Fans on social media agreed, with one tweeting: “Helena Eagen walked outta that elevator and not Helly R i fear.”

While another said: “Me liking every tweet about Helly R because that’s for sure Helena Eagan #Severance”.

You can stream Severance on AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime in the UK.
