Warning to people planning to serve up Baby Guinness at parties for New Year's Eve

The drinks are very popular during the festive period

The dust has settled on Christmas and in case you are still wondering what day it is, it's the last day of 2025.

That's right, tonight we are probably all doing something to celebrate the new year, whether it be heading to a party, going to a club or simply enjoying a bit of Jools Holland's annual hootenanny at home.

While some of the world's most powerful and richest people all like to dock their yachts in the same place for the new year, the rest of us probably just have a few drinks and pray that we don't wake up with a hangover to bring in the new year.

Of course, there's plenty of folks that don't like to drink all that much anymore and that means enjoying a few J2Os on New Year's Eve, but for some, a couple of beers or wines may well lead to the shots coming out later in the evening.

One shot that has exploded in popularity in recent years is the Baby Guinness, despite it tasting nothing like Ireland's beloved beer.

The drink consists of a mix of coffee liqueur and Irish cream, which naturally already makes it potentially unsuitable for vegans who you might be hosting during the festive period.

However, it appears that the drink might not even be fit for vegetarians as one of the parent companies of a popular coffee liqueur option in Baby Guinnesses suggested that it could come into contact with animal derivatives.

While Tia Maria is more than suitable for vegetarians, its alternative, Kahlúa, is one that shouldn't be used if you're thinking of hosting any non meat-eaters this evening.

"We can clarify that Kahlúa is not directly manufactured with any animal derivatives," a spokesperson from Kahlúa's parent company Pernod Ricard said last year.

"However, it’s important to note that a bone char filtration process, which does involve contact with animal derivatives, is employed by one of our sugar suppliers during refinement.

"This widely accepted practice in the sugar industry currently prevents us from categorising Kahlúa as suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets."

Kahlúa added last year: "We can confirm that Kahlúa is NOT suitable for vegetarians or vegans. This is because of the sugar refinement.

"It appears there was some confusion as, prior to 2016, Kahlúa was deemed suitable. At this time, Kahlúa is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans."

To make a vegan Baby Guinness, mix Tia Maria or another vegan coffee liqueur with a vegan Irish cream like Baileys Almande.

Pour the cream over a spoon to create the classic layered look and bob's your uncle, you have yourself a proper Baby Guinness.

I wouldn't drink too many however, if you want to get at least some sleep and you want to wake up without feeling horrible on the first day of January.

It's worth remembering that Dry January also officially starts at midnight, so you may also want to slow things down once the fireworks go off.
