Greggs fans are losing it after realising bakes have secret markings

There's more to your steak bake than meets the eye

Nothing beats a good old Greggs pastry - especially on the morning after the night before.

Although you might not give it a second thought before chomping into your steak bake, perhaps you will after finding out that they all have secret markings.

Don't get us wrong - the codes aren't some sort of subliminal messaging designed by the illuminati.

Can you tell which one this is?

The reason is actually pretty simple: it's so employees can tell them apart.

Considering a lot of the pastries all look like beige squares from the outside, staff would have a pretty damn hard time trying to tell the difference between a cheese and onion slice and a sausage and baked bean melt.

Although there are signs at the front, they'd have to walk round the counter each time they get an order in - and there's always the risk of a mix up.

Imagine trying to explain that one to a veggie.

Although the secret codes are, well, secret, it's not exactly the kind of big reveal the MI5 are concerned about.

So when a Greggs employee took to a recent Reddit thread, they were more than happy to explain.

It all started when one person asked: "Can you tell us the pattern on the pastry that identifies whether it’s a steak bake, chicken bake, vegetable bake, etc. thanks."

This one's a cheese and onion slice - we know this thanks to its markings.

The bakery worker replied saying that pastries with diagonal slits are the fan favourite steak bakes, while wavy horizontal lines mean chicken.

Those with v-shape markings are cheese and onion and last but definitely not least is the sausage and baked bean melt, which has a series of straight, horizontal lines.

People were clearly excited over the revelation, with the OP's response earning more than 2,000 upvotes.

Going into more detail about the codes, former Greggs manager Jamie Dear told the Mirror: "This is something I hadn't noticed when I was a shopper at Greggs before I started working there.

"One of the first things you have to do is learn the markings.

"And it can only really be done in a textbook style with a list and picture of what it should look like. It's like a new language."

He continued: "The corned beef has a zig zag line going across it, the sausage and bean has three horizontal slits, while the ham and cheese bake has a trim round the side with lines across.

This one's the sausage, bean and cheese melt - but you know that by now.

"The cheese and onion bake has got giant Vs and the steak bake has three diagonal slits with a trim around the side."

So there you have it - a nice bit of shinfo to hold in your back pocket the next time you're down the pub with your mates.
