A father and his nine-year-old son have teamed up to start making sunglasses in Australia out of disused plastic bottles.

There is so much rubbish that ends up in our landfills and recycling centres every year and Nik Robinson wanted to make sure that this trash was being turned into treasure.

Each pair of sunnies is made from a single 600ml bottle and there are three colours that you can choose from: Lemonade, Cola and Aqua.

Clearly, it's a nod to the names of popular liquids found in these bottles.

Good Citizens

Nik said he was inspired to start Good Citizens two years ago when his son Harry was learning about the environment at school. When Harry asked his dad if there was anything he could do to help the planet, Nik starting thinking of something he could contribute.

He added: At first, I didn't think much of it but it got me thinking. Maybe we could do something; maybe we could take trash and turn it into something good.

"One of the biggest waste issues globally is single-use plastic bottles, so I began researching whether recycled PET could be used for products. I couldn't understand why manufacturers were making products with new plastic when there was such a massive pile of discarded plastic that could be used.

"I now know why. It's not easy. It's taken over two years of research, testing and tweaking. We jokingly call it our time of 'trial and terror'. There have been times when I've found myself exhausted sitting in the car in a layby on the way back from the factory crying because we couldn't see a way to fix a problem. We were determined for our frames to be 100% recycled and that's been incredibly challenging."

Thankfully, they have managed to perfect their craft and now have some pretty slick sunnies to show for all their hard work.

Nik hopes that these sunglasses will show people that making things solely from recycled material isn't an impossible goal.

You can pick up a pair for $99 and do your bit to helping get rid of unused plastic.
