There is a secret hand signal that lets people know if you are in danger.

The gesture was shared by the Canadian Women's Foundation at the start of the pandemic last year to help those in lockdown forced to live in a dangerous environment.

It allows people who may feel threatened to get the attention of strangers or friends, so that they can call the police or provide assistance.

It involves holding the hand up with the palm facing the other person, the thumb is them folded into the palm and the finger closed over the top.

The signal has been shared once again in the wake of the tragic death of Sarah Everard, who disappeared after leaving her friend's in Clapham, London, at around 9.30pm on 3 March.

Sarah, 33, who is originally from York and attended Durham University, was walking home when she was last seen - a journey that should have taken her just 50 minutes.

The hand signal will alert a friend or stranger to the fact a person is in danger.

Her family had said it was 'totally out of character' for her to go missing.

Yesterday (12 March), police confirmed the tragic news that the human remains that had been found in a woodland area in Kent belonged to Ms Everard.

Following her death, Ms Everard's family said they were utterly heartbroken and urged anyone who may have information to come forward and help with the investigation.

They said: "Our beautiful daughter Sarah was taken from us and we are appealing for any information that will help to solve this terrible crime.

"Sarah was bright and beautiful - a wonderful daughter and sister. She was kind and thoughtful, caring and dependable. She always put others first and had the most amazing sense of humour.

"She was strong and principled and a shining example to us all. We are very proud of her and she brought so much joy to our lives.

"We would like to thank our friends and family for all their support during this awful time and we would especially like to thank Sarah's friends who are working tirelessly to help."

Her death has also sparked an outcry across the country, with people using the hashtag #NotAllMenButAllWomen to condemn the abuse women experience on a regular basis.
