Psychic Octopus Boiled Up And Eaten Despite Impressive World Cup Predictions

What is it about octopuses that gives them such psychic abilities? Greater minds than mine have pondered this very question for generations (probably).

As ever with major a sporting competition, a psychic octopus was brought forward and successfully predicted Japan's scores during the group stages.

Rabiot, a giant pacific octopus, was pretty spot-on when he made his original guesses using a paddling pool and three different baskets - one representing a Japanese win, one to represent an opponent win and one for a draw, whichever one he swam towards was determined to be his 'choice'.

He had a 100 per cent success rate, after guessing that Japan would beat Columbia, draw with Senegal and lose against Poland, so don't mock the octopus.

But one thing our eight-legged friend didn't see coming was his death via the rather painful method of being boiled alive at a fish market. Jesus.

Still, at least he died before he saw Japan get kicked out of the competition this evening, eh?

Photos of a dead octopus, which were reportedly nonother than Rabiot popped up online before the poor bugger even got a chance to predict the outcome of tonight's game.

He's now believed to have been served up as someone's dinner. Although it's yet to be officially confirmed if the dead octopus is Rabiot, his owner Kimjo Abe previously said his business was more important than keeping the little fella alive.

Speaking to Soranews24, he said: "I hope that the second Rabiot will also give all the outcomes correctly and that Japan will go all the way." I reckon Rabiot was the team's lucky mascot and now he's gone so has their chance of World Cup success.

Rabiot had some pretty big shoes to fill - eight of them, probably - after the legendary psychic octopus Paul passed away in 2010.

Paul accurately predicted the result of eight matches in the 2010 World Cup; sadly, he died the same year. I think we need to do a study on the life expectancy of psychic octopuses who make accurate World Cup predictions.
