A dog owner thought her beloved pooch had died but her grief turned to relief when she discovered that he was just high after munching on some drugs he found outside.

Melissa Sturnick, from Irvine in California, was outside with her dog Bentley when he started to chew on what she thought was a twig.

But later that day she was left horrified when the chihuahua curled up for a nap in her lap and would not wake up.

Panicking, Melissa tried everything she could to wake the dog, before she eventually ran and got a piece of ham to see if food could rouse him - which, fortunately, it did.

In surprisingly adorable footage, Bentley can be seen struggling to keep his eyes open.

Melissa said: "I was so relieved when I realised he was going to be OK but I really freaked out at first.

"Bentley loves to eat anything off the floor; containers, tacks, vibrators, food and apparently now weed.

"I was sitting with my roommates outside when I saw him chewing on something. I thought it was just a twig or pebble, so I didn't think much of it. Since it was dark we couldn't see anything.

"He curled up in my lap sleeping. He can be a very heavy sleeper, so sometimes I just wake him up to make sure he is okay.

"But he didn't wake up. I held him up like they do to Simba in The Lion King and yelled 'Bentley' while shaking him. His eyes were open but I didn't see him move.

"He moved, but I was already freaking out. I didn't know what was going on. I took him inside and he just laid down. He couldn't keep his eyes open.

"My roommates looked for hydrogen peroxide to give him, as if you give a dog some it will make them throw up.

"Finally, I decided to give him some ham to see if he was responsive. He walked to me and took the ham, so by then I knew he was okay.

"I gave him a big piece of bread, since eating helps the high go away. He ate and just went to lay down away from me.

"I wanted to monitor him. But he would not come out, so I had to force him. I held him for a bit and tried not to laugh. But it was hard because he had a perfect stoner face.

"I know it was bad and I felt for him, but his reaction was priceless. He relaxed, smiling and just dozing off. So, I let him be and he rested."
