While holidays are suppose to be a time of pure joy and happiness, they can often bring a lot of stress whether we like it or not.

Whether that is passport problems at the airport or just general holiday etiquette, either way, it can be pretty frustrating.

And a furious Aussie couple know all about this after they woke up at the crack of dawn and noticed the sun loungers near the pool at their Bali resort were already claimed.

Thom and Lisa first saw the unattended beach towels at the Grand Barong Resort in Bali just before 6:30 am on Wednesday (14 June) morning.

Leaving your towel on a sun lounger - even if you leave it unattended - has long been seen as a way to claim them, but that has somewhat changed in recent years.

Some resorts have banned the reserving of sun loungers in recent years.

As hotels and resorts cottoned on to the fact guests were putting their towels out first thing and not returning for hours, some have banned holiday-goers from reserving a space.

However, that hasn't stopped some guests who still leave their towels on sun beds only to return many hours later.

In Thom and Lisa's case, they waited until 2pm and the guests who had put their towels out at 6:30am were still nowhere to be seen.

As a result, the pair decided to toss them aside and take the seats for themselves.

But the people who put them there showed up at 3:30pm and their reaction was 'priceless', according to Thom.

Taking to Facebook, he wrote: "We woke up this morning [and] noticed towels already placed on the afternoon shade sun beds.

"We went about our day and eventually arrived at the pool at 1pm to the beds untouched, nobody in sight. At 2pm we told pool staff we were moving the towels as nobody had been on them.

"We then waited until 3:30pm for them to eventually arrive and the realisation that their spots are gone, iPads and books in hand was priceless."

Thom and Lisa have been praised for their actions on social media.

Lisa added: "We literally left and asked others to take them just to keep the pettiness going."

The post has garnered quite the reaction on social media, with many praising the couple for standing their ground.

"I would've done the same except I wouldn't have waited - if they weren't there using them its free for all," one Facebook user wrote.

Meanwhile, a second added: "Am I the only one hoping there's a day two to this situation."

Well, there was a part two to this story, though it certainly isn't as exciting as part one.

Thom posted a picture of an empty poolside on Thursday (15 June), adding: "Free all morning."
