Controversial winner declared as Britain's favourite pie

A confusing new list of Britain's favourite pies has presented itself and you'd never guess what the winner is in a million years.

My favourite chicken and mushroom pie didn't even make the top 10.

Well it seems that online travel guide Taste Atlas has decided to put together a list that will absolutely baffle pie lovers.

Each pie is rated out of five and the number one pie has been given 4.3 stars, which makes you think who's been sitting in the judging panel for this one?

The travel guide's 2023 March issue has perplexed foodies who can't understand how there isn't a separate list for sweet and savoury.

Anyway, the top 10 is as follows:

10) Pork pie - 3.7 stars

If you love a pork pie, then you're not the only one, as the dish has been a staple in the UK since the 1300s.

Perhaps the best thing about it is that you can eat it hot or cold.

Don't eat it hot though unless you're a serial killer.

9) Meat and potato pie - 3.8 stars

When it comes to comfort food, this pie ticks all the boxes and the filling can consist of different types of meat, including beef or lamb, mixed with chopped veg and onions.

8) Melton Mowbray pork pie - 3.8 stars

Same as no.10 obviously, but Melton's is considered to be one of the best pork pie makers around.

7) Pastie - 4 stars

'What pastie?' is what we're all thinking. But yeah, it's hard to beat a Gregg's if we're being honest.

6) Pie and Mash - 4 stars

The combo is tried and tested and full of carbs, which is great if you're bulking.

5) Cheese and onion pie - 4.1 stars

For veggies, this is a winner, but for meat-eaters, I think it's hard to see the appeal.

4) Steak and Ale Pie - 4.1 stars

One of Britain's most famous pies, filled with chunks of tender braised beef, onions and carrots, dark brown stock, freshly chopped herbs, and Worcestershire sauce.

3) Shepherd's Pie - 4.2 stars

A personal favourite of mine, however, a crispy, buttery, fluffy, top is defo needed.

This is where it gets interesting/borderline out of order.

2) Steak Pie - 4.3 stars

What many of us would consider to be the number one pie in the UK has to settle for second place, which only makes the top spot even more controversial.

1) Banoffee Pie - 4.3 stars

Yes - a dessert pie - has somehow made it to number one spot and no one can really understand why.

Consisting of bananas, whipped cream and a thick caramel sauce, combined either on a buttery biscuit base or one made from crumbled biscuits and butter - it's defo a nice treat.

But number one? Don't think so, mate.
