Girl's Message In A Bottle Answered After 29 Years

Sending out an SOS...

It's taken almost three decades but a woman has finally had her message in a bottle answered thanks to an appeal on social media.

Linda and David found the bottle - that had been thrown into the Atlantic Ocean in 1988 - when they were walking along a beach in Georgia.

"David made a remarkable discovery while we were doing a beach sweep on Sapelo Island this morning," Ms Humphries explained to the Telegraph.

"He found this message in a bottle tossed from Edisto, South Carolina 29 years ago! We have a current name and city for the now 37 year-old sender, but any phone [numbers] we've found were dead ends. Will keep trying."

Following the initial Facebook post the two of them managed to track down Ms Moss, who is now Miranda Chavez, after it was spotted by one of her friends.

"The most amazing thing just happened!" she responded. "I received a message on Facebook. Linda Humphries found a message in a bottle that I put in the ocean...

"I was 8 years old!!! She found it on Sapelo Island and is sending it to me!! So cool!"

Ms Chavez told CBS: "Who would have thought? It's so awesome how something that small - no matter what you've got going on in your life - can take you back to your childhood and to some of the happiest times in your life.

"It was meant to be found. It was meant to do something, even if it was just to have people have something positive to say for a few days.

"I guess it served its purpose."

The news comes after the hunt began earlier this year for somebody who sent a message in a bottle out in 1997.

Pieter Schaper, who works for conservation agency Staatsbosbeheer in the Netherlands, said he was amazed when he pulled the message out of the plastic bottle and found it had been written by Susie Hampton, then aged 10, who lived in Kent at the time.

It was addressed to 'whoever picks up this bottle', and read: "Hi my name is Susie Hampton. I'm 10 years old.

"I put this bottle in the water on 25/8/97.

"Can you write and tell me where you found it and when?
