People Are Realising How Rude Lyrics To 'Genie In A Bottle' Are

A woman has taken to TikTok to show her reaction at learning what the lyrics to 'Genie In A Bottle' mean... watch it below:

Kate Steinberg posted the clip on to her TikTok account (@itskatesteinberg) alongside the caption: "I was today years old when..."

She added a comment to the video which reads: "When you realize at 30 genie in a bottle is not about a genie in a bottle..."

The clip shows her happily singing (or miming) along to the Christina Aguilera banger in the car with her seatbelt on and a drink.

But as she finishes the lyric: "I'm a genie in a bottle, you gotta rub me the right way," her face visibly changes as she comes to terms with what she's saying.

Commenting on her video, one person - who is very much in the same boat... or bottle - wrote: "I sang this in my 5th grade talent show. In front of adults. And no one stopped me!"

Another wrote admittingly: "Hi. Hello. I'm 31 years old and just now, today, right here, realized what this song was about."

A third said: "I PERFORMED THIS AT MY CHURCH TALENT SHOW OH NOOOOO."

Oh no indeed. There's only one place for that person.

However, arguing the meaning behind the song, one person wrote: "I always thought this meant the opposite of rub me the wrong way - as in don't annoy me? Make me like you?"

Someone else agreed saying: "This is exactly what it means peoples head [sic] are just in the gutter more often than none now a days."

Backing the suggestion up, another wrote: "She [Christina] said in an interview that is exactly what the song is about. Basically treat me right and you can get me at my best."

Wonder what 'hormones racing at the speed of light' meant... or 'my body's sayin' let's go'. Probably just didn't want anyone to annoy her, yeah. Mmmhm. SURE.

Speaking during a 1999 interview on the set of the music video, she said: "It's about me and a bunch of my friends like hanging out at the beach and we're just having fun in the summer."

But what's it really about?
