A teenager has miraculously survived after his car smashed through the barriers of an elevated highway, while travelling at 105mph, and crashed onto the road below.

The dramatic crash was captured on CCTV, which shows a white car hurtling towards the side of the road, breaking through the barriers and flying through the air before smashing into the ground.

The incident happened in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.

Patricio Avila, 19, was driving his white Volkswagen Voyage down the city's General Paz motorway at high speed - around 170kmph (105mph) - when he lost control of the vehicle.

Patricio's car bust through the motorway's protective barriers and went tumbling down onto a grassy verge on the other side of the road below, scattering pieces of his car everywhere as it fell.

Other motorists were forced to swerve and stop in the middle of the road to avoid the debris.

The car reportedly belonged to Patricio's stepfather. It was inevitably written off in the horrendous crash and Patricio had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters.

He incredibly survived the crash and is now recovering in hospital, where doctors say he is 'conscious and stable'.

His numerous injuries include damage to his chest, a fractured hip and a fractured ankle, while brain trauma specialists are also keeping a close eye on him. He can breathe by himself and has also started eating again.

Some local media speculated that the incident might have been a deliberate suicide attempt, but Patricio's family have firmly rejected these theories.

One witness of the incident, named only as Veronica, said she was astounded anyone could have survived such a dramatic crash but was critical of Patricio for putting himself in danger with such erratic driving in the first place.

She said: "He was full of blood and had problems to get out the car. We were scared of touching him. He had half of his body inside the car and half out and the firefighters arrived and rescued him.

"I don't know how he managed to drive at such high speeds down the motorway without crashing into another vehicle. He is lucky to be alive."

Local media said the car involved had been subject to numerous fines in the past for speeding and driving while on the phone.

In any case, the teenager is incredibly lucky to have somehow escaped with his life.
