A woman has thanked a hairdresser who may have saved her father's life after she spotted a lump behind his ear and insisting he get it looked at.

James Mackenzie, 82, went to see hairdresser Kerrin Taylor for his usual trim and tidy-up when she found the lump behind the ear, the Metro reports.

Kerrin urged James to get it checked but was worried he wouldn't, so she contacted a family friend who told James' daughter.

Talk about going above and beyond.

Thanks to Kerrin's persistence, James attended a GP appointment and was referred to a specialist who identified the lump as a basal cell carcinoma.

James, who is a widower, is now set to have the lump removed later this month and his grateful family have praised Kerrin.

James' daughter Clare Peevers said: "I had never met Kerrin before but I knew her name because she used to cut my mum's hair.

"I knew she was very nice to my father when my mother died and gave him his first haircut for free because I think he must have walked in looking a bit lost.

"My mother always cut his hair and I don't think he had ever been to a hairdresser."

Clare said her dad visited the Four Market Street Hair Salon in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, where he admitted to Kerrin that the lump had been bothering him.

She added: "She said that wasn't good and said he needed to see a doctor about it and he said, 'Yes, yes, yes' - typical man.

"He didn't say anything to me about it and she just thought he wasn't going to do anything about it.

"I think she could tell from his reaction."

Kerrin managed to get in touch with Clare by speaking to one of her customers Graham Archer, who was able to pass on the message.

Clare said: "I don't know how she knew they were connected but somehow she had worked out he knew my father and told him.

"I think this is my way of saying thank you to Kerrin and showing how they look after their customers."

You can say that again - well done, Kerrin.
