A man has been slated online after he went for dinner with a pal and tried to charge him to cover the cost of three fries he took off his plate.

Splitting the bill can be a bit of a thorny issue - some people like to work out how much they actually spent down to the penny, others are happy to just half it and some don't mind picking up the entire tab.

But TikTok user Peter Pierdinock - or @peterpribylpierdinock - posted a video showing a whole new way of diving the bill and it's fair to say its divided fellow TikTok users, too.

Peter shared a screenshot of the exchange between him and a 'friend of a friend' who he had recently gone out for a meal with. The guy tried to charge Peter 47 cents for the three fries.

The first message reads: "Hey! I'm diving up the dinner bill rn [right now] - you had some of my fries right? Lol."

To which Peter replies: "Haha I think I had a couple, why?"

The man then responds: "OK cool no worries lmao I'll just ad like 47 cents to ur venmo charge? If that's cool [sic].

"So $23.82 total! Ur meal + tip + part of my meal that you ate."

Peter later clarified that he had no more than three fries and only after they had been offered to him.

The clip has since gone viral, with more than three million views and, as people have plenty to say about the 'friend'.

One person wrote: "I would never talk to them again."

Another joked: "Forty-seven cents is not a bad price to find out what a bad friend he is."

A third said: "How are people not embarrassed to do this? I even struggle asking back money I lent."

Others revealed they'd found themselves in a similar spot with one person commenting: "My friend was like this.

"She asked me once if I wanted food and I said, 'sure' and then she ordered food and I paid her for it and she wanted me to pay for her gas, even though it took three minutes to drive there."

While another said: "I've had a close friend do this to me because I ate the two slices of bacon she didn't want."
