However, one woman decided to shun convention and rocked up to her sister's big day dressed as a T-Rex. Well, that's one way of doing it...
Laid-back Deanna Adams decided to let her bridesmaids wear whatever they fancied for her special day to ensure they all felt comfortable and happy, which is a great idea.
However, I'm pretty sure she wasn't expecting her younger sister and maid of honour Christina Meador to turn up in a massive inflatable dinosaur costume - but that's exactly what happened.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Christina, 38, from Texas, said the idea started off as a joke, after Deanna told her she could wear whatever she liked on the day.
While discussing plans, Christina sent her sister a message to say she'd splash out on a dinosaur costume, before throwing out some other off-the-wall ideas, including a Doctor Who TARDIS.
As the big day approached, Christina arrived in Nebraska for the wedding, complete with the T-Rex costume, at which point she reminded Deanna about the unusual outfit and said she still planned on wearing it.
From here, Christina says it became a game of 'chicken' between the pair, with her assuming Deanna would eventually tell her she couldn't dress as a T-Rex and would instead have to wear the second option she brought along - a more traditional dress for a wedding.
However, neither woman backed down. The special day arrived and while Deanna looked stunning in her beautiful white gown, Christina looked like... well, a dinosaur.
Christina shared some photos of the day on social media and they quickly went viral, for obvious reasons.
She told The Daily Mail: "A couple of people asked if they could share it, and with my sister's permission I posted it on my Facebook page and allowed the closed group members to share from there - and then it got way bigger than expected.
"But it's nice to see that most people get it, and the few who didn't were at least just showing concern for my sister's feelings, not knowing her or the situation."
Oh and in case you're wondering, Deanna was also happy to see the snaps going viral - so much so, she was quick to shoot down anyone who accused Christina of acting badly.
In response to one negative comment, Deanna wrote: "It's not a joke, it's a giant middle finger at spending thousands of dollars and putting ungodly amounts of pressure on ourselves just to please a bunch of people who, in the end, only want free food and drinks.
"The point was to get married to the man who treats me like I hung the moon, and we did that part."
I actually like it - I reckon Christina could start a trend here.
