Think you know your way around the kitchen? In comparison to this fella, you almost certainly do - meet the man who lived in a flat for two years before discovering that what he thought was a 'fake cupboard' was in fact a dishwasher.

Tom Hale, 30, shared that he had spent days of his life washing up by hand for no reason, posting the images of the hidden appliance on Twitter.

Journalist Tom, who lives in Brixton, London, wrote: "I am in shock. Lived in this flat for 2 years and only just discovered TODAY it has a dishwasher.

"I thought it was a fake cupboard.

"I've wasted days of my life washing up."

His post quickly racked up thousands of likes and comments.

Some cynical social media users doubting his revelation, with a few original thinkers tagging in the Didn't Happen Of The Year Awards account - to which Tom responded: "Remarkable amount of men (it's all men) trying to call bulls**t on this.

"I'm flattered they think so highly of me."

But others showed he wasn't alone, sharing their own stories of discovering hidden secrets in their homes.

One person replied: "This happened to us at university! We discovered the dishwasher the day we were emptying the cupboards to move out...not sure we spent much time washing dishes before then though or putting them away - hence not discovering the dishwasher in the fake cupboard."

Another said: "I only recently found out about crumb trays on toasters. Years of turning them upside down."

Elsewhere, another man recently went one better than finding a secret appliance, when he found a secret passageway behind one of his kitchen cupboards.

While viewing a flat, he discovered it came complete with a bizarre escape tunnel built into a kitchen cupboard. See for yourself:

Actor and writer Jamie Wilkes posted the strange find on Twitter, where he quickly racked up more than 160,000 likes.

He captioned the video: "Viewed a flat today and I don't think I'll ever be able to stop thinking about the back door..."

People were just as bemused as Jamie at the find.

One follower replied: "I can't decide whether that's super creepy or super cool."

I'm going with the first one.

Another person (hopefully) joked: "It's eminently practical. How else are you supposed to remove the bodies discreetly?"
