Chet Hanks has revealed why he often speaks with a Jamaican accent, also claiming he's had a lot of 'love' from Jamaican people giving him 'respect'.

Hanks, 31, has previously been accused of cultural appropriation for the accent, having shown off his slightly dodgy take on Jamaican Patois at red carpets, pool parties and in social media videos about Trump.

In a new interview on Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan, Hanks - who is the son of Hollywood superstars Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson - explained that it all stems from a former girlfriend and her family.

"I was hooking up with this chick, one day she was on the phone with her family in Jamaica and she was really in the middle of a heated conversation," he said.

"I really had no idea what the f**k she was saying... I'm like, 'Wow! So break that down'."

Occasionally dropping into the accent throughout the interview, Hanks continued: "She was just telling me how to say different s**t, so for a week I was really on a Jamaican tip and that just happened to be the week of the Golden Globes."

Of course, Hanks had everyone scratching their heads that week after turning up to the Golden Globes red carpet and speaking into the camera in confident Jamaican Patois.

Remembering how he turned his phone on after the ceremony to see that the moment had gone viral, Hanks said: "I had Jamaicans blowing up my Instagram, [saying] 'respect general, respect! Come to the island'.

"Jamaican people showed me the most love hands down, then you got all these social justice warriors in America saying I'm a f*****g villain.

"I don't f*****g know, dude. If I'm interested in f*****g bullfighting, I can fly to Spain and watch a bullfight and if I want to talk to a Matador and say, 'Hey bro, can you teach me how to fight the bulls?' and he's like, 'Hell yeah bro, put this on'.

"He's stoked that I'm stoked. Some a*****e out there is gonna say I'm f****d up because I'm culturally appropriating the Matador culture."

Hanks also spoke a little bit about his 'White Boy Summer', a 'fun' and 'inclusive' concept he's adopted this year, much to the confusion of many.

"White Boy Summer is love," he said.

"It's about the white boys that love black queens. So white boys that are tuned in to the black girl magic."

Well, that's cleared that up.
