Kanye West Says He Crashed Taylor Swift's VMAs Speech Because God Wanted Him To

Kanye West has spoken out about the time he famously crashed Taylor Swift's VMAs acceptance speech, saying God wanted him to do it.

West, 43, had stormed the stage at the 2009 VMAs after Swift was handed the Best Female Video accolade for her music video to 'You Belong To Me'.

He told the bemused winner, who was just 19 at the time: "Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!"

Speaking in a new episode of Nick Cannon's podcast, Cannon's Class, West explained some of the rationale behind that moment, explaining how he'd essentially been given the go-ahead by God.

The rapper told Cannon: "Right now, God is giving me the information and he ain't give me no other information [...] So that means he wants me to say this now.

"If God ain't want me to run on stage and say Beyoncé had the best video, he wouldn't have sat me in the front row. I would've been sitting in the back and they would've made it the first award and he wouldn't have made it so ridiculous, because I had never heard of this person before and 'Single Ladies' is one of the greatest videos of all time."

Some people had pointed out that West appeared to be drinking from a bottle of Hennessy Brandy during the event, having been spotted with it even on the red carpet.

"I was only drinking Hennessy because I didn't want to go to the awards show because it was a set-up," West added.

While West claimed to have been under the influence of God that fateful night in 2009, he said it wasn't until years later that he actually started to read the Bible, having first done so when he was in hospital for psychiatric observation and to be treated for temporary psychosis.

He continued: "God brought me to my knees multiple times. The first time that I was put into hospital in 2016, I actually started reading the Bible.

"That was part of what God hit me with. You know, God has a calling on all of us and he uses us in different ways."
