It was a truly devastating day for fans everywhere when Chris Evans hinted he'd hung up his shield and said goodbye to the Marvel Universe for the last time.

The 37-year-old actor posted an emotional tweet saying filming for the next Avengers film is done and it's 'been an honour' to play the role over the last eight years, but it turns out just because we're losing Evans doesn't mean we're losing Captain America from our screens for good.

Another Marvel Universe Actor, Frank Grillo - who played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War - said we could see more of the Cap and the next person to take on the role could be black or female.

In an interview with Larry King he said: "I don't know, but there've been rumors that [the next] Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman. You know? So they're looking."

It's got to be noted this is pretty much Grillo confirming that Evans is done with the role and will be hanging up his hero mask after Avengers 4.

However, his statement can't come with much shock as more and more female actors taking the lead in their own superhero movies such as Gal Gadot topping the box office in Wonder Woman (yes, I know it's DC not Marvel) and Brie Larson starring in the hotly-anticipated upcoming movie Captain Marvel.

It also means any girls who grew up with the ambition of being the amazing Captain America it's their chance to shine.

Grillo also said that the role of the Cap could be taken up why a black person, again, this no shock with Captain America's bestie The Falcon - played by Anthony Mackie - making waves with fans (and perhaps would even be an obvious choice to step in for his on-screen bud).

Then you have Chadwick Boseman taking the lead as T'Challa in Black Panther - the film absolutely topped box offices, reigning in more than $1.3 billion.

But with all the speculation of who will be the next Captain is easy to forget Marvel Studios haven't actually yet released Avengers 4 - and the film hasn't even been given a proper title or release date - and with this in mind the fate of Captain America and the rest of the team is still up in the air has Thanos runs wild in the Marvel Universe.

We'll just have to wait and see what Marvel have in store for fans next.
