It's always sad when something you love comes to an almighty end, and South Park fans might want to look away now - that could be the case for the beloved potty-mouthed cartoon, after its creators announced that they could be done with the show by the time they're 60.

This follows a bout of better news regarding the animated sitcom - season 23 is due to premiere, the show's been commissioned through to Season 26 and it's coming to Netflix. Suppose some bad tidings were due...

We must take the rough with the smooth, in any case, and the news that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone might only carry on for another decade definitely falls into the former category.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about South Park's future, Parker said: "I don't think we have ever had an 'OK, let's sit down and decide if we are going to keep going'."

OK, reassuring.

Well, until Stone added: "I am 48. Trey turns 50 this year. So I will say that I don't think we will be doing this show when we're 60." Oh brilliant. What a way to start the weekend. Cheers. Son's crying.

Parker went on to point out that they said in old interviews that they would stop when they hit their 40s and look where we are now...

Following the announcement that the show has been renewed by Comedy Central through to 2022, Parker said: "In this day and age, it is more of an achievement than it was before, the fact that we are still going."

When South Park first aired back in August 1997, thousands of parents around the world immediately banned their kids from watching it due to the brash and offensive style of humour. Undoubtedly, this is probably one of the reasons as to why it's now become such a cultural mega hit.

South Park has never shied away from controversy, which is often thanks to their ethos of 'if it's funny, it's funny'. Co-creator Trey Parker told the Evening Standard: "Everyone can be made fun of, and everything should be made fun of if you do it in the right way."
