Sir Elton John has taken aim at the Catholic Church for being against same-sex marriage, yet profiting from his biopic Rocketman.

The legendary singer took issue with the idea that the Vatican invested a hell of a lot of money in the film about his life.

Sir Elton slammed the Church's hypocrisy on Twitter, writing: "How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they 'are sin', yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman -- a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David??"

The Daily Beast reported in 2019 that the Vatican had 'a $4.5 million expenditure recorded in February' related to Men In Black: International and Elton John's rather steamy biopic Rocketman.

While the latter focused on Sir Elton's rise to fame and his various struggles, it featured the entertainer's drug problems and was the first studio movie to portray gay sex between men in an authentic way'.

The move comes following the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) recently publishing a decree saying the Vatican can't bless same-sex unions because it 'cannot be considered licit' and that God 'does not bless sin'.

The Guardian reports: "According to Catholic teaching, marriage between a man and a woman is part of God's plan and intended for the creation of children.

"Since gay unions are not intended to be part of that plan, such relationships cannot be legitimately blessed."

The document went on to say that 'God does not and cannot bless sin,' adding: "He blesses sinful man, so that he may recognise that he is part of his plan of love and allow him to be changed by him."

While the decree said 'the Christian community and its pastors must welcome with respect and sensitivity persons with homosexual inclinations', it apparently doesn't allow them to be legitimately blessed.

The decree as issued by the CDF was approved by Pope Francis, which came as a blow to gay Catholics who had hoped Pope Francis was creating a more inclusive environment in the Church.

He has previously mentioned the need to welcome LGBTQ+ people into the church and that homosexuality is not an illness.

The Vatican has not commented publicly on the matter.
