Universal has allegedly told thousands of cinemas that a new and improved version of Cats is on its way - so maybe you should hold fire before checking it out at the cinema. If you were planning to watch the universally-panned musical adaptation, that is.

The movie was released on Friday and it seems the team behind it aren't completely satisfied because, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a new version is being sent out with 'some improved visual effects'.

Insiders have told the publication that it's being done at director Tom Hooper's request, after the film was ripped to shreds by critics.

A Twitter exchange revealed that a note was sent to theatres playing the film which claimed to read: "DCDC and Deluxe-Technicolor will be sending updated FTR-20 SMPTE DCPs of Cats which will include some improved visual effects. The runtime is unchanged."

The movie has received a lot of criticism and has been given a 19 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as getting 2.7 out of 10 on IMDb.

Due to all the CGI effects, it's been estimated that Cats would have cost around $100 million (£76.8m) to make and had an opening day which made around $2.6m (£1.9m).

Jason Derulo, who stars in the film, told TMZ in New York on Thursday that he thinks Tom Hooper is a 'class act', adding that he doesn't think there's another director that's more 'classy than he is'.

The singer said: "I'm just excited for the people to actually see it, because reviewers - I mean - what the hell do they know? Have they made a film ever in their life?"

It's fair to say that Cats has received some bad reviews, including one critic who wrote: "Every now and then a film comes along that requires a level of strength, courage and, indeed, patience, the likes of which I am simply unequipped for."

Another added: "In the hands of filmmaker Tom Hooper, he's turned this surreal concept concerning the meaning of life and death into something of a freak show."

If those reviews weren't enough, people have now taken a disliking to the fact that Judi Dench's character has been spotted with a human hand bearing a wedding ring... did they think these were actual cats with absolutely no human-like features?
