A controversial 2011 movie that was banned in New Zealand is having a bizarre resurgence on TikTok with users saying they're 'traumatised' after watching it for the first time.

Megan is Missing was heavily criticised when it was released - with some branding it 'torture porn' and slamming the movie's use of graphic and sexual violence.

New Zealand went one step further and decided on a ban, saying the flick has 'objectionable' content, adding that 'the availability of the publication is likely to be injurious to the public good'.

The found-footage-style movie tells the tale of 14-year-old Megan and her best friend Amy, who live in Hollywood in California.

Megan disappears after meeting up with a boy she's been chatting to online and Amy ends up trying to get to the bottom of what happened to her friend.

For some reason, almost a decade after its release, reactions to the movie have started going viral on social media where some users claim they've been left 'traumatised'.

Posting on Twitter after watching the movie one person wrote: "I just watched it and I have never been more triggered or traumatised by something in my entire life.

"This world is so f***ing disgusting, I cant stop crying and I feel sick to my stomach.

"If you haven't watched it yet, please don't. It's horrifying."

On TikTok one person wrote: "Please watch this film at your own risk.

"It is something I will never watch again. I am forever traumatised."

While a third tweeted: "Absolutely horrible and repugnant movie. Wouldn't recommend ever."

In fact, the response to the new influx of viewers was so strong that the movie's writer and director Michael Goi - who has since written for American Horror Story - shared a message on his own TikTok warning people. You can watch it below:

The director explained in a video: "I got a text from Amber Perkins, the lead actress in my movie, that it's exploding on TikTok at the moment.

"I didn't get to give you the customary warnings that I used to give people before they watched Megan Is Missing, which are: do not watch the movie in the middle of the night, do not watch the movie alone, and if you see the words, 'Photo No. 1' pop up on your screen, you have about four seconds to shut off the movie if you're already kind of freaking out before you start seeing things that maybe you don't want to see."

The movie, which was marketed as 'based on a true story' but was fictitious, is not readily available to stream in the UK.
