Robert Downey Jr Confirms He's 'All Done' With The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Robert Downey Jr has confirmed he won't be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The star was asked about any upcoming plans within the MCU while on the SmartLess podcast, to which he announced he was finished with Tony Stark and Iron Man.

Speaking to the 55-year-old about his work/life balance, host Jason Bateman asked: "I'm assuming that the Marvel thing is at a slower speed now... or you're done with that now?"

To which Downey Jr replied: "That's all done."

However, this is slightly at odds with what he said back in January when he suggested 'anything could happen'.

During an interview with Extra TV, alongside his wife Susan, he was asked if there was a chance of a comeback, to which he replied: "Yeah, anything could happen. I'm really enjoying-"

But before we could find out what he was really enjoying, his wife cut in to say - quite accurately - that his words would now be the headline of the interview.

Downey Jr, whose character died in Avengers: Endgame, continued: "As far as I'm concerned, I hung up my guns and I'm good to let it go. I also think Marvel is on this journey now and they're trying a bunch of other stuff, and I'm excited for them to see how all that goes. It's hard to project."

Of course, Marvel fans might already be aware that Tony Stark is tipped to make a cameo appearance in the upcoming Black Widow flick.

And this appearance wouldn't necessarily make what he said in the SmartLess podcast untrue, as Downey Jr only talks about upcoming commitments, not stuff he's already filmed.

Last year, Deadline reported: "Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020."

There's also rumours that while he will be back for the new movie, it will be in the form of a deleted scene from Captain America: Civil War.

But fans will have to wait a little bit longer to find out if any of those rumours turn out to be true, because the movie's scheduled release date was pushed back to November due to the coronavirus pandemic forcing cinemas to close.
