For the last 14 years, fans of The Sopranos have been toying with what happened to Tony Soprano in that final scene without any definitive answers. Until now.

Really, it shouldn't have been too tricky to piece together but the show's creator, David Chase, has finally spoken in detail about it.

In a previous attempt to clear up any theories people may have had, Chase referenced the moment as a 'death scene' during an interview for the 2019 book The Sopranos Sessions.

Then, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, he was asked whether the statement was a 'slip of the tongue' and confirmed that 'no' it wasn't.

He went on: "Because the scene I had in my mind was not that scene. Nor did I think of cutting to black. I had a scene in which Tony comes back from a meeting in New York in his car.

"At the beginning of every show, he came from New York into New Jersey, and the last scene could be him coming from New Jersey back into New York for a meeting at which he was going to be killed."

He went on to explain how they came to the final ending, adding: "I think I had this notion - I was driving on Ocean Park Boulevard near the airport and I saw a little restaurant.

"It was kind of like a shack that served breakfast. And for some reason I thought, 'Tony should get it in a place like that.' Why? I don't know. That was, like, two years before."

For anyone that isn't aware - and don't complain about spoilers, it's been 14 years - in the finale of the show, viewers were left without the answer of whether the titular crime boss ever actually made it out of a family dinner alive.

He was in the middle of a feud with another organised crime organisation, and there was a potential hitman secreted away in the restaurant.

However, before we got the closure that we so badly craved, 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey played, Tony glanced up and the screen faded out.

At the time, it caused chaos, and - although most people have now accepted the ending - it continued to divide opinion.

Well, not anymore.
