The idea of a stranger creeping up to your house in the middle of the night is a fairly sinister one.

Now, if that person was wearing a massive television set on their head and leaving TVs outside your front door, you'd probably still think it's fairly creepy, but at least you'd have a new TV set.

Well, homeowners in Virginia are scratching their heads as that's exactly what happened to them over the weekend.

Doorbell surveillance cameras caught the mysterious man in the act, dropping off a bunch of sets before disappearing into the night.

Speaking to WTVR-TV about the bizarre act of apparent kindness, resident Jim Brooksbank said: "He's committed to his trade.

"He wants to be known as the TV Santa Claus. I don't know."

According to reports, the strange round of gift-giving happened on Sunday in Henrico's Hampshire neighbourhood, with around 50 homes visited.

The mysterious man left TVs outside 50 homes.

Mr Brooksbank added: "We got an old tube-style TV, 13 inch."

Another homeowner, Michael Kroll said: "I thought my son brought it home, but apparently not. They had way too much time on their hands if they had all these TV's and spread them all over the neighbourhood."

Local police were notified of the situation and have received video footage from several neighbours, but they are treating it as a prank and believe no one is being targeted in particular.

They also visited the homes and have now collected all of the television sets that were dropped off.

Speaking to the press, one officer said: "At most this seems to be more an inconvenience to the community."

The only crime the mystery man would have committed, according to police, was illegal dumping.

Mr Kroll says he thinks it's just a prank.

Mr Brooksbank praised the police for their assistance, saying: "The police did a great job of coming up and collecting them all."

But this isn't the first time homeowners have woken to find a TV waiting for them outside their homes. The exact same thing happened in another neighbourhood last summer.

It has led some residents to assume it's all just a harmless joke.

Mr Kroll said: "I think it's just a prank. Some college students who are just bored."

Mr Brooksbank then added: "It's summer, and people are getting ready to go back to school. Maybe TV man was just ready to strike and put a little humour in our lives."
