A 100-year-old woman has revealed one of the secrets to her continued longevity - her love of sausage rolls.

In fact, she loves them so much that Greggs threw her a surprise 100th birthday party to celebrate.

Before we crack on, it's not scientifically proven that eating sausage rolls will keep you alive past a century, but great-grandmother of two and centenarian Mary Emerson certainly loves a meat pastry.

For many years, she made her own, but nowadays she says that she prefers to dip into her local Greggs to get her fix.

Mary said: "I've enjoyed baking for as long as I can remember and everyone has always enjoyed my sausage rolls.

"I still enjoy making them, with a little help.

"One of my favourite times to make them is around Christmas time with my granddaughter Naomi."

That's nice, isn't it?

Now, over the years she's had the opportunity to sample more than a few different types and recipes of sausage roll. So, what does she think the key is?

Cutting them up small, and making sure you use decent quality sausage meat. That's all.

She explained: "Although my eyesight is poor and I have the odd niggle, I still try to make sausage rolls as they go down so well,

"That and staying positive has definitely been the secret to a long life."

Mary, who lives in Stansted, Essex, was thrown the party by Greggs on Sunday and even received a special sausage roll telegram from Greggs' Chief Executive Roger Whiteside.

The message read: "I am so pleased to know that you are celebrating your 100th Birthday on June 30, 2019.

"We would like to commemorate this landmark occasion with your years of dedicated service to the glorious sausage roll."

Despite reaching 100 not out, Mary almost didn't survive her first year after she was born prematurely with her twin sister in 1919.

It's fair to say she's beaten those odds and is still remarkably sprightly for her age, taking no regular medication and still in good health.

Her daughter Kathy said: "Mum is quite independent, she receives three daily visits from wonderful carers and is a true farmer's daughter, stoic and no nonsense.

"I think she is absolutely amazing and at 100-years-old she has definitely defied everyone's expectations.

"She has always been a fantastic baker and her sausage rolls have always been very tasty."

In summary, Mary said: "I have lived a good life."

Quite right. A life lived in service to sausage rolls is indeed a valuable and enjoyable one. On that, we can all agree.
