The new Mortal Kombat film has finally landed in the UK, after it came to the US in late-April.

With just a couple of weeks until cinemas can reopen, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Warner Bros didn't wait until then to release the film.

For whatever reason, they didn't, and it's available to rent on most major platforms from Thursday 6th May in the UK.

Here's all the information you need on how to stream it.

Mortal Kombat will be available to rent from the major film platforms in the UK from 6th May. Warner Bros confirmed this in a tweet, saying: "Flawless victory! Rent the Movie Premiere at Home from May 6 from all your favourite digital retailers. #MortalKombatMovie."

Going by previous Warner Bros home rentals like Godzilla vs. Kong, which were available on Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes and the Sky Store for £15.99, we expect the same will apply for streaming Mortal Kombat on Thursday.

Had it not been for COVID-19, the film would have been released in cinemas. From 2022 though, Warner Bros has signed a deal with Cineworld which will allow the franchise to exclusively show new releases 45 days before streaming.

Cast - is Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat (2021)?

Jonathan Carlton - aka Johnny Cage - is one of the seven original Mortal Kombat characters who appears in the first films. He remains one of the franchise's most popular characters to date.

Unfortunately, the action movie star/deadly martial artist is teased at the end of Mortal Kombat, which suggests that he'll be a part of any sequels Warner Bros. plans.

This got the fans talking about who they'd love to see in the role, and Ryan Reynolds' name came up more often than not.

As for the rest of the cast, the latest Mortal Kombat film features stars from all over the world, who hail from TV, film and martial arts.

The cast (or should we say "Kast") for Mortal Kombat (2021) includes:

  • Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2) as Cole Young
  • Jessica McNamee (The Meg) as Sonya Blade
  • Josh Lawson (Bombshell) as Kano
  • Tadanobu Asano (Midway) as Lord Raiden
  • Mehcad Brooks (TV's "Supergirl") as Jackson "Jax" Bridges
  • Ludi Lin (Aquaman) as Liu Kang
  • Chin Han (Skyscraper) as Shang Tsung
  • Joe Taslim (Star Trek Beyond) as Bi-Han Sub-Zero
  • Hiroyuki Sanada (Skyscraper) as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

Also featured are Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; and Laura Brent as Allison Young.

The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker, Simon McQuoid, and produced by James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman), Todd Garner (Into the Storm), McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh (Men in Black: International, The Amazing Spider-Man 2).

Inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, which recently enjoyed the most successful video game launch in its history, production of the film began in 2019 in Australia.

Plot

In Mortal Kombat (2021), MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down.

Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with.

Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.

But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana-the immense power from within his soul-in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Here's a first look at the new 2021 Mortal Kombat film.

Age rating UK

The latest Mortal Kombat was given an R-rating, due to its 'strong bloody violence and language throughout, and some crude references' - making it the first non-PG film in the franchise.

R stands for 'restricted' in US films, meaning anybody under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. In the UK, films with an R-rating are usually given a 15 certificate, which means anybody under the age of 15 won't be allowed to see it - even with an adult.

How many Mortal Kombat movies did they make?

The first Mortal Kombat film came out in 1995, followed by its sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997.

After this, Midway, the game publisher, filed for bankruptcy and the court agreed to the sale of most of its assets to Warner Bros in 2009. The next Mortal Kombat film was released in 2021.

And good news - 'Mortal Kombat' writers have confirmed plans for a trilogy of movies.

Mortal Kombat 12 Release Date

The film Mortal Kombat comes off the back of the successful, action-packed martial arts game franchise and fans want to know when Mortal Kombat 12, the latest in the series, will be released.

Mortal Kombat 11 was released in 2019 and the release of MK 12 has been confirmed for April 2023 - certainly something to look forward to.
