Many people may attribute Elon Musk's extreme wealth to his savviness as a businessman, but there's also a longstanding conspiracy theory proposing that something else a little less straightforward might be at play... namely, time travel.

Yep, some people believe that the real reason Musk is so damn successful is because he's actually a time traveller, with a number of conspiracy fans linking him to a Canadian fighter pilot named Raymond Collishaw, who was born in 1893.

The theory crops up regularly on the internet, including in a 2017 YouTube video and a Medium blog post from 2019.

More recently, an image of Collishaw went viral after a Twitter user implied he was, in fact, Musk.

A user called @RationalEtienne responded to one of Musk's tweets, adding in their reply: "Also why were you in Canada in 1914, why was your name Raymond Collishaw and why was your occupation ace fighter-pilot?"

That tweet has racked up 2,400 likes since it was posted last February, which perhaps suggests there are many others out there who agree with the comparison.

Someone commented: "Amazing! I never believed in time travel but now..."

Many others referred to the man as Musk's 'doppelganger' while another said the two had 'similar eyes'.

Joining in on the theory, Musk joked in a reply: "Full disclosure, I'm actually a 3000 year old vampire. It's such a trial assuming all these false identities over the centuries!"

According to FirstWorldWar.com, Collishaw was 'Canada's second-highest scoring fighter pilot during World War One, achieving 60 aircraft victories by the war's close, plus a further eight observation balloons'.

Born on 22 November 1893 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Collishaw joined the Canadian Fisheries Protection Services at the age of 15.

"With the outbreak of war in Europe he managed to join the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in January 1916 as a probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (having earlier applied to the Royal Canadian Navy without success)," the website explains.

"As commander of the so-called 'Black Flight' Collishaw was the first pilot to claim six victories in a single day. He was also the highest scoring ace to fly the Sopwith Triplane. Towards the close of the war Collishaw flew long-range bombing missions from France to Germany.

"With the armistice Collishaw elected to remain with the air service, initially serving in Russia during 1919 and finally attaining the rank of Air Vice-Marshal following distinguished service during the Second World War in the Western Desert."

Collishaw retired 'involuntarily' from the RAF in July 1943, before his death in 1975 at the age of 82.
