The identity of Britain's Got Talent's masked magician known as 'X' has finally been revealed... and it turns out it's someone who should be familiar to fans of the show.

In fact, he's none other than trickster Marc Spelmann, who appeared on the show last year.

Somehow, X managed to keep his true identity a secret, performing in a mask at all times - even in rehearsal, so that no one would learn who he was.

After removing the mask during tonight's live final, he told viewers: "It was always about hope and never giving up. It has been an honour sharing X with you. I am X."

The show's most notorious judge, Simon Cowell, described the act as 'incredible', admitting he 'never in a million years would have guessed' who was behind the mask.

Fellow judge David Walliams simply responded: "Wow, wow, wow," while hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly placed their hands over their mouths in shock and surprise.

Mindreader and magician Spelmann received a golden buzzer in his audition during the 2018 series, but went on to be eliminated in the semi-finals after losing the judges' vote.

Earlier in the series, he had experienced some controversy as viewers watching BGT at home seemed to think they had spotted a huge clue as to how he wowed the judges with his incredible magic skills.

Loads of fans flocked to social media during Spelmann's act, claiming that a voice crucial to his act had been 'dubbed'. However, it was ultimately the judges who brought about an end to his role in the competition.

This year, performing as X, he got through to the final after wowing the judges with a trick that proved Ant and Dec really are as in sync as fans have always suspected.

He gave Ant an electric shock to the backside, before his pal jumped from his chair, grabbing the same part of his own posterior. Spooky, eh?

He also asked Cowell to select a word from a list (he chose 'hope'), before requesting fellow judge Amanda Holden to open the first post on Cowell's Insta account way back in April.

The snap she found depicted Cowell stood standing in front of the word 'hope', as X lurked in the background.

Unsurprisingly, he won the public vote with this and went straight through to the next round.

He's now gone on to compete in this year's BGT live final tonight, up against the choir from Flakefleet Primary School, escapologist Jonathan Goodwin and dancers Libby and Charlie - the judges' wildcard.

Also featuring this year are Dave and Finn, 4MG, Siobhan Phillips, Colin Thackery, Kojo Anim, Ben Hart and Mark Macmillan, all competing for the grand prize of £250,000... and, of course, a spot at the Royal Variety Performance.
