Jared Leto's Joker Could Be Getting Own Movie

There's no word on when it will come out but Warner Bros are looking into whether to make it an origin film or connected to Suicide Squad

There was a lot of hype when DC announced it was making a movie of Suicide Squad, which would be the first time we saw a film version of the Joker since Heath Ledger's unforgettable performance.

Jared Leto has some serious shoes to fill and everyone was interested to see what he was going to bring to the table.

When the movie came out, however, we were upset, frustrated and disappointed that he literally appeared on the screen for 15 minutes. They teased the hell out of him in the promotional material and then he seemingly dies in a helicopter crash. Thanks for nothing Warner Bros.

But now it looks like we're getting a whole lot more of Jared Leto's Joker as Variety reports Warner Bros is looking at doing a film for the character

The entertainment site says: "Sources tell Variety that Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from Suicide Squad.

"Plot details are currently unknown, but the studio's idea is to expand on the world created by Suicide Squad and tie into future instalments of that property."

So that could mean one of two things: either the Joker didn't die in that helicopter crash and we'll be seeing what happens to him while the Squad was battling the Enchantress, or we'll get a bigger backstory to how the character wound up in Belle Reve Prison.

Every iteration of the Joker, including the comics, has failed to give us a decent understanding of his backstory. There's been nothing to suggest what caused him to go psychotic and become this serial killer that plagues Gotham.

DC Comics

The character's creator, Jerry Robinson, wrote: "They've given many origins of the Joker, how he came to be. That doesn't seem to matter-just how he is now. I never intended to give a reason for his appearance. We discussed that and Bill [Finger] and I never wanted to change it at that time.

"I thought-and he agreed-that it takes away some of the essential mystery."

So while we probably won't get a Bruce Wayne story of seeing his parents shot dead, hopefully we get some idea of his origins.

There's no word on when this standalone film will come out but we can expect the Suicide Squad sequel next year so maybe more will be revealed in that movie.
