I've got some wonderful news to brighten this otherwise miserable day: Netflix is creating a brand-new series based on Roald Dahl's children's stories.

Yup, the streaming giant has joined forced with the Roald Dahl Story Company to bring to life a number of the author's most beloved stories, including Matilda, The Twits, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach.

The animated series will be the first of its kind, following a number of massively successful cinematic and theatrical adaptations, with Netflix promising to 'remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl while also building out an imaginative story universe that expands far beyond the pages of the books themselves'. Sounds good to me.

Although written decades ago, the stories are as popular today as ever, with one of his books selling every 2.5 seconds. Impressive.

Felicity Dahl, Roald's widow said: "Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl's stories.

"This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled."

No release date has been announced for the new series yet, but production will commence next year, until then we'll just have to sit tight and wait for any new details.

Melissa Cobb, vice president of kids and family content at Netflix added: "Immersing ourselves in the extraordinary worlds of Roald Dahl stories has been an honor and a massive amount of fun, and we are grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world.

"We have great creative ambition to re-imagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values."

For now, we don't have much to go on - just a short teaser trailer featuring a Wonka Bar and the Netflix logo on a golden ticket, but I can almost guarantee that these shows will have as many adult viewers as they do children.
