Fans have been losing their minds since the trailer for the upcoming superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame was released last month.

It was one of the highlights of the year for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who had been waiting for the moment since the end credits rolled on the Avengers series' third film, Infinity War.

But the much-anticipated teaser left audiences with more questions than answers, with questions marks over the fate of some of their favourite superheroes.

And with his contract set to come to an end after the next film, could this be a sign that Robert Downey Jr, one of the franchise's leading actors, is set to exit the MCU this year?

If the trailer is anything to go by, it doesn't look good for Downey's character, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, who we see floating through space, with no sign of being rescued.

The tense clip shows the billionaire tech genius seemingly losing all hope. resigned to the fact that his luck has well and truly run out, as he records a final message for his fiancée Pepper Potts.

A tired Stark stares into his Iron Man mask and says: "Dear Miss Potts, if you find this recording don't feel bad about this, part of the journey is the end. Just for the record, being adrift in space with zero promise of rescue is more fun than it sounds.

"Food and water ran out four days ago, oxygen will run out tomorrow morning and I mean it, when I drift off I will dream about you, it's always you."

Unsurprisingly, Marvel fans have been deeply worried about the fate of their beloved Iron Man and have been expressing their concern online.

One fan wrote: "Can't accept that."

Another added: "Well, renew the contract. Simple as that I won't take no for an answer."

Last year Downey told the press that he would like to end on a high.

He said: "I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [Marvel movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it's embarrassing."

But Stark isn't the only character that could be set to call it quits. It was already known that contracts were also up for Captain America - Chris Evans - and Thor - Chris Hemsworth - at the end of the fourth movie, but it hasn't been announced whether they will be leaving the franchise for good.

C'mon Marvel, say it ain't so.
