Can the real Slim Shady please stand up and take a bow? Eminem has gone and broken a 36-year-old UK record just over a week after blowing everyone's minds with the surprise release of his new album Kamikaze.

The album took the world by storm following its release, just eight months after his previous album Revival.

The star, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, announced it with a tweet which read: "Tried not 2 overthink this 1... enjoy. #KAMIKAZE Out Now."

Kamikaze is considered his most successful album in a decade, topping the chart over the weekend of its release.

Holding on to its number one spot this week would mean Em's surprise album would be his ninth consecutive number one LP.

That would beat the current record which he currently holds alongside ABBA and Led Zeppelin - each of those three acts has eight consecutive number one albums to their name.

According to the Official Charts Company, Eminem's 10th album has a substantial lead over the other albums in the race to number one - amazing considering it's not even available on physical media yet (though if you're a fan we know you'll be dying to get your hands on it).

Though he's dominated the album chart with his new record, it's not his only reason to celebrate - songs from the album have slotted into three of the top ten spots in the midweek singles chart.

'The Ringer' has been sitting pretty at number four, while 'Lucky You' slotted in at number seven and 'Greatest' at number nine.

Kamikaze has received significantly more praise than Revival which was described as 'dad-rap'. The earlier record even saw him partnering up with stars such as Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran - which some considered to be relatively 'safe' choices for collaboration (come on though, do those two ever do a bad duet?).

The new album, which is co-produced by Dr Dre, is dripping with controversial lyrics - from claims he was chased by the secret service, to calling out others for 'mumble rapping' - but admittedly that's one of the reasons fans have come to love Eminem.

Over the years the rapper has been known to publicly diss Mariah Carey, Limp Bizkit and Elton John and Moby, to name but a few - although Elton John has confirmed they get along quite well and Eminem even sent a present to the 'Rocket Man' singer for his wedding to husband David Furnish.

Whether you're divided over his new lyrics or not, the hugely successful chart performance and rave reviews all amount to solid evidence that the real Slim Shady is back.
