Usually when people are marking historic occasions that deserve a little celebration, they will enjoy a tipple or two. The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special is one hundred percent one of those occasions and the cast did have a real beer to honour the moment.

James Corden (Smithy), who wrote the episode alongside Ruth Jones (Nessa), apparently encouraged the cast members to have a bev as they filmed some scenes down the pub.

Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason, explained: "It was just one of the loveliest days I've had on set filming with everyone. Towards the end of the last day of filming we may have had a real drink in that scene.

"Because we didn't have any lines and we were just enjoying ourselves, we did all have a drink. It was James's idea. It was really lovely. It wasn't Archers and lemonade!"

Melanie Walters, who plays Gwen West, said that the drinks helped with 'all the singing and dancing' adding: "There was no effort involved! I think that transfers to the screen."

As we would expect (or at least hope), the stars of the show finished filming and went out for more drinks afterwards with Mathew Horne (who is coming back as Gavin) claiming that Alison Steadman (Pam) was the last one standing.

The 41-year-old told The Mirror: "Even Rob Brydon came out. Rob is so dull, he never socialises. Alison is always the last one standing. It was such a ball.

"If you needed to be any more excited for it, Mathew Horne has claimed that this festive special is the 'best episode ever'.

After admitting he was 'anxious' over whether or not the cast would work well together again and the chemistry was going to be there, he went on to say it is 'the best episode of the show we've ever done'.

Horne: "When I first found out, when I was first told that there was a script, obviously I said yes, I would want to do it, because 'And Stacey' is a slightly less catchy title," he joked.

"I just didn't really believe it because, although the script was written and I knew the BBC would want it, I didn't know if they'd be able to get everybody back together because it's a big ensemble cast and everybody's generally quite successful and one of the main characters lives in America.

"So I didn't believe it and then it happened. So yeah, it was amazing and it was a really wonderful experience."
