Dad Responds To Neighbours' Note Calling Christmas Decorations Tacky By Buying More

A man has doubled down on his Christmas decorations after being told that his original effort was 'tacky' by his neighbours.

Here's a cautionary tale about winding up your neighbours, and - like all great stories - it has a simple beginning.

Bridgewater resident Billy Morgan decided he wanted to bring a bit of festive cheer to his quiet bit of Somerset. So, off he popped to the shops in order to decorate his house.

He came back with three projectors to cover the exterior walls of his house with seasonal images, some icicles, an inflatable Santa and a snowman.

However, unbeknownst to Billy, he'd enraged a group of scrooges nearby.

Two days later, a note was passed through his letter box claiming to be from a concerned group of local residents. It began: "Polite request."

Which, as a start, is usually the indicator that what comes next is not a polite request.

The note continued: "Myself & other neighbours I have spoken with feel as though your attention seeking 'Christmas' display is just far too much. It's on the verge of tacky.

"[We are] all about the Christmas spirit but please tone it down.

"Thanks, neighbours."

It would be really easy to be disheartened by that kind of hostility. After all, where is their Christmas spirit? Isn't Christmas supposed to be gaudy, tacky, and a bit of fun?

Billy, a father of four children, wasn't going to let them tell him what to do. Instead of relenting, he brought more Christmas decorations to the street, this time with a more personal message. He blew the note up to a larger size and stuck it to an inflatable elf, just one of the extra props he purchased.

In the end, both lots of decorations cost him nearly £300 ($394).

Billy said: "If you put a note like that through my door I'm going to go big or go home, so I decided to get more.

"Christmas is meant to be tacky; it's meant to be bright and colourful and is for kids to have fun."

He continued: "Writing and posting a note through my door like that is a real Scrooge thing to do, it's not in the spirit of Christmas at all."

Luckily, most people seem to agree. When Billy shared the ordeal on Facebook, one person wrote: "Keep up the good work Billy hope you keep adding to your Xmas joy and spreading happiness and joy to all your neighbours and friends and a Happy Christmas to you and your family."

Another said: "What mean neighbours you have, and probably only one horrid one hiding behind the 'we all feel the same' rubbish.

"It's not nice to put unsigned letters through someone's door, it's cowardly vulgar and downright tacky."

Too right. More power to you, Billy.
