Man’s ‘Genius’ Hack To Reduce Energy Bills Divides The Internet

Man’s ‘Genius’ Hack To Reduce Energy Bills Divides The Internet

How many tealights does it take to fry an egg?

As energy prices continue to soar for millions of UK households, people are looking for ways to save pennies where they can.

While many people have offered up some genuinely useful hacks and tricks to cut down costs, a recent suggestion shared on TikTok has left the internet baffled.

Adrian Ghervan, who has over 300k followers on the video sharing app, decided to swerve the whole expensive gas problem by cooking his food using tealights.

You know those tiny candles you get from IKEA? Well, in the clip he uses seven of them to fry an egg.

As the TikToker removes one of the burner caps on his gas-powered hob, a voiceover says: “I got 99 problems but gas ain’t one.”

He then replaces the disc with the collection of tiny candles and proceeds to fry his egg using the heat of the fire - let’s just hope they aren’t scented.

To be fair, it does do its job - but even so, the TikTok community is divided, with many complaining that the cooking method takes far too long.

“Would take an hour to cook that 1 egg lol,” wrote one commenter, while another said, “Bro had to speed up the video cause by the time the egg cooked, the wheat ripe to be made into flour and then bread.”

A third simply joked, “3 hours later…,” to which Adrian replied: “10 minutes for oil to heat, 3 minutes for the egg to be ready. Total -13 minutes. You’re welcome.”

Others joked about the price of candles skyrocketing after catching wind of this hack, which honestly isn’t beyond the realms of possibility these days.

Then there are the TikTokers who rate Adrian’s suggestion, with one writing: “Wow didn’t think that would work.”

“I mean that’s acc clever,” said another, while a third chimed in: “This how the whole UK gonna be living in April.”

That last comment refers to the fact that energy prices are set to rise a record breaking 54 percent from April after regulator Ofgem lifted the cap on tariffs to £1,971.

Ofgem has raised the maximum rate energy suppliers can charge for an average dual-fuel energy tariff by £693.

The rise will likely impact 22 million households in the UK and applies to those who are on their energy supplier’s default tariff.

Cornwall Insight, an analysis outfit, said last month that it thought the price cap would be £1,915 per household.

There are also worries about next winter, when experts predict bills could spike to as much as £2,329.

So maybe Adrian really is onto something with his tealight trick…
