If dogs are good girls and boys (which they are), then guide dogs are the best of the best.

Not only are they fantastic companions who provide an endless source of entertainment and joy, but they also offer guidance and support to those who are visually impaired.

In celebration of these incredible working pups, Netflix has dropped a heartwarming documentary following the journey of a puppy litter as they train to become guide dogs for the blind.

Per the film's official synopsis: "Pick of the Litter follows a litter of puppies from the moment they're born and begin their quest to become Guide Dogs for the Blind, the ultimate canine career.

"Cameras follow these pups through a two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm.

"Along the way, the dogs meet a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their human.

"The stakes are high and not every dog can make the cut. Only the best of the best. The pick of the litter."

Our leading puppies belong to a California-based organisation called Guide Dogs for the Blind, who name this particular group the 'P' litter. Hence their adorable names: Phil, Patriot, Potomac, Primrose and Poppet.

According to The Daily Beast, only two thirds of the bundles of joy will make the cut following the rigorous training programme.

But before you start typing those angry letters, let it be known that the ones who don't pass are sent to regular forever homes with loving parents - ones who are no doubt delighted to nab such a well-trained pooch.

For those who do make it, they're carefully selected from thousands of applications to one special owner whose day-to-day life is made possible thanks to the immeasurable skills of these incredibly sharp creatures.

Aside from the training side of things, the documentary focuses on the urgency of their capabilities. Apparently Guide Dogs for the Blind receives 1,100 applicants each year, some of whom have been waiting years for an assignment.

There are also plenty of heartwarming anecdotes told by people who own a guide dog to keep spirits up and show every angle of these life-changing pets.

And the best part of all? The documentary is available to watch on Netflix now - that's your evening plans sorted.
